Keeping a Coffee Journal

If you follow trends or pay attention to the ever-changing landscape of your local strip malls, you may have noticed a resurgence in wine and cheese shops over the past few years. With the rise in popularity of these foodie boutiques, it is no surprise that these same wine and cheese aficionados have begun to journal about their favorite past time. While this may seem silly at first, it is actually a useful tool that we, as coffee drinkers, can really use to our advantage. In this blog post, we will discuss starting your own coffee journal and the benefits of keeping one. So grab a fresh brew and enjoy the read!

What is a Coffee Journal

Keeping a coffee journal is a great way to keep track of your favorite coffee brews, share your experience with others, and refine your coffee tasting ability. Most of us tend to find a particular coffee that we like and stick to that for the rest of our lives, rarely branching out to see what else is out there. While this is certainly a safe option, it also limits you in your possibilities and growth as a coffee drinker.

Consider this – your first cup of coffee was probably just a sip of whatever your parents were drinking. Maybe it was a late night treat that you have fond memories of and, since it was your first taste, you probably think of it as the best coffee in the world. Odds are, however, that it was a simple store brought coffee ground and not some specialty blend.

If you were to never drink another type of coffee, you might not know what you were missing. But normally coffee drinkers branch out for one reason or another – maybe a friend has a different brand or you are traveling and stop in a coffee shop and feel a little adventurous. Whatever the case, when you try a new cup of coffee – even if it is not as good as your normal brand – you are expanding your tasting experience, and learning to appreciate new coffees, as well as old ones.

Think about it like a steak. You may have grown up with cube steak and enjoyed it your whole life. Then one day you go out to a fancy dinner and try a rib eye or porterhouse. Once you do, you can not imagine your steak-eating life without them. The same goes for coffee!

In our next blog post, we will touch upon some additional benefits of keeping a coffee journal and discuss some tips for keeping track of your favorite coffee brews!
