Benefits of Drinking Water

We have all heard it a million times – from the moment we were born it seems people were always telling us one of the keys to better body health was to make sure we drink plenty of water. Got a cold? Get lots of liquids. Feeling tired? Drink more water. The reason you hear people say, “drink water more often” is simple: its true – you should. In this article we are going to explain why that is the case, as we discuss the many benefits of drinking water.

Water is an interesting thing. Nothing beats an ice cold glass of water on a hot summer day. Water is everywhere – 71% of the Earth itself is covered in the precious liquid – and, according to the USGS Water Science School, if you calculate all of the water on, in, and above the Earth, it would equate to about 332,500,00 cubic miles. That’s a lot of H20! Even our bodies are mostly water. Babies weigh in at 90% water, while most adults come in at the 70% mark.

Aside from being such a crucial part of our make-up, water is vital to our function and overall health. It is so important, in fact, that while we could go up to 40 days without eating food, we could only live about 3 days (depending on activity level) without water.

Benefits to Drinking Water

Now that we know a little more about water, let’s take a look at why drinking enough of of that cool and refreshing bottled spring water everyday is vital to our health and well being.

Drinking Water Helps Kidney Function

Amazingly, our kidneys have to filter around 200 quarts of blood every single day, which includes removing waste and transporting that waste in the form of urine to the bladder. In order to achieve this, kidneys need a lot water to rid itself of toxins. In addition, not drinking enough water can lead to kidney stones.

Drinking Water Helps Control Fluid Balance

As we discussed above, depending on your age, your body is between 60-70% water – and with good reason. Our body uses this water to help with digestion, transport of nutrients and waste, regulate body temperature (moving heat away from the bodies organs and transporting it to he skin’s surface via sweat), blood circulation, and much more.

Weight Loss and Water Consumption

Not surprisingly, water can also help you lose weight. There are several reasons for this. First – and perhaps the simplest reason – is that water has no calories or sugar. If you consume water instead of sugary sodas, which are full of calories, you will naturally take in far fewer calories every day.

Water also helps you feel full. Drinking a glass of water 30 minutes prior to a meal and drinking water while you eat makes you fuller sooner, meaning you are less likely to eat your entire plate – or that entire bag of chips!

Consuming Water Helps Muscles and Prevents Cramps

If you are active, you should know the benefits of drinking water. Not only does it help prevent cramps in the body and stop you from becoming dehydrated (which can be fatal in serious cases), it also helps with muscle fatigue. If your muscles are not properly hydrated, they will not function properly and you will get tired much faster than you would if you were well hydrated.

Tips to Drink More Water and Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is about more than drinking water – though that is definitely part of the equation. In addition to drink your fill of delicious H20, you can also get your hydration needs met, in part, by eating foods that contain high concentrations of water, such as fruits and vegetables. For instance, cucumbers and strawberries are around 90-95% water, versus bread, which is only 30%.

Always try to have water at every meal or during snack times. I always keep a bottle of spring water around – even if I am drinking something else, making an effort to drink water while I eat. I also keep bottled spring water at my work desk and carry one with me if I take a trip.

Finally, always consider replacing soda with water – it is much healthier for you – and cheaper too! Even if you just replace a soda or two a day with water, you will notice a huge difference in the way you feel, as well as in your weight.
